The best way to mentally prepare yourself for an upcoming trip to Las Vegas or your weekly game with the boys is watching a great gambling movie. Not only will it give you the basis for a perfect poker face, it'll get you excited for the feel of plush carpet beneath your feet, the slot machine lever in your palm, and the quiet thwack of.

As a gambler myself, I have an affinity for gambling movies. I tend to love any movie in that space, even the bad ones. So to limit this post to five was tough, but hey, the show must go on.
As for what makes a good gambling movie for me? The inherent risk, hitting on a big payday or that one big score, the grind, the sweat. Basically, everything that makes gambling fun.
Disclaimer: I know many of you will wonder how I left off Casino? Simply, I don't consider it a gambling movie, it's more of mob flick. For these picks, I made sure to emphasize the GAMBLING over the movie.
Mississippi Grind
Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn are great in this movie about a road trip to New Orleans in search of a high-stakes poker game. Mendelsohn's character 'Gerry' is convinced that Reynolds is his 'good-luck charm', so why not, right? Be careful about watching this movie around the holidays, as it's mostly about the dangers of gambling: addiction, regret and depression.
List of casino games. Owning Mahoney
Based on a true story of one of the biggest one-man bank frauds in Canadian history. The movie follows the ups and downs of Dan Mahoney, a Toronto bank employee. He has unlimited access to money and is addicted to gambling and its lifestyle. Roulette machines in casinos. Not a good combination in real life, but perfect for a movie. Everything that happens is almost unbelievable to a point, but the highs and lows make it even better. That and the acting of the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman.
White Men Can't Jump
I know most of you are thinking, 'how did a basketball movie make this list'? But, hear me out. The movie stars Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as streetball hustlers. Yes, you read that right, HUSTLERS. Everything about the movie fits the definition of gambling to a 'T': taking a risky action in the hope of a desired result. From the game betting, double crosses, and the risky gamble that resolves itself with Rosie Perez's character ending up on Jeopardy, the whole movie has a gambling undertone to it.
Cincinnati Kid
There are so many old gambling classics to choose from, but I landed on this one. The movie is about a young poker player named Eric Stoner, played by legend Steve McQueen. The 'Kid' builds his reputation by playing the world's best players in high stakes poker games. I don't want to spoil much, but I still can't get the last scene out of my head. That ending scene really goes into the psyche and true essence of a gambler.
Rounders
Was there any doubt? I'll keep it short.
From the classic Atlantic City scene where Ed Norton and Matt Damon go to hunt for 'fish', to the last hand between Mike and Teddy KGB, no other movie better encapsulates all the elements of gambling. Norton, Damon and John Malkovich are great and the movie holds the test of time. The movie also holds a special place in my heart, as it was the reason I got into Texas Hold 'Em Poker.

And, if you are still wondering what Teddy KGB's last hand was, he had top set.
Was watching the final poker scene in Rounders. Antivirus zap 3 1 0 – virus & adware blocker. Always wanted to know Teddy's hand, then I saw he threw his cards at him. He had top set. pic.twitter.com/ZjfR0R2ZlS
